Day 1 Lower Zambezi
Arrive in Lusaka this morning and connect with a private flight to Kayila bush airstrip – a 25 minute flight. Here you are met by the Vintage Safaris team and walked from your aircraft some 10 – 15 minutes to your camp, an echo of the 1920’s, set on the banks of the Zambezi.
There is nothing quite like a walk through the African bush and the day is spent undertaking introductory walks in the surrounding area. Not only the excitement of encounters with big game on foot, but also the detail of the environment, leaves one with an intimate appreciation of creation.
Vintage Safaris’ fully appointed mobile camp facilitates all the elegance and comfort of travel from a bygone age – classic, spacious tents and first class dining under the African Sky. (B,L,D)
Day 2 Lower Zambezi
A full day to explore the area. We might decide to walk into the hills for a picnic lunch by a spring and enjoy a fantastic panorama of the Zambezi valley. Walks are led by your guide and host and we return to camp on the river. (B,L,D)
Day 3 Lower Zambezi – into the foothills
We break camp early to travel into the foothills of the escarpment. As we walk into undeveloped wilderness, the complete portable camp is transported and set nearby a river as it runs from the hills. Our walk brings us through a game rich area and we take time to learn more about the areas’ wildlife, recognising tracks and signs, birding, vegetation study and bushlore. If fresh tracks are found we can follow them to experience the thrill of walking up to animals, all the while safely guided with both armed guide and game scout’s expertise. We arrive at the new site for tea. (B,L,D)
Day 4 Lower Zambezi - hills
A day spent exploring the hills or walking the flatlands below camp. The area offers a remoteness accessible only on foot as we find deep pools of fresh water in hillside streams to stop and swim. (B,L,D)
Day 5 Lower Zambezi – canoeing
After an early breakfast we walk some 30 minutes to a vehicle which takes you to canoes and your canoe guide on the river. Nothing brings one closer to the essence of the Zambezi than to silently travel by canoe. As wildlife is drawn to the waters’ edge, so there comes an opportunity to witness game as never before. Exploring channels, drifting by herds of animals and marvelling at an ever-changing setting, this experience gives one all the thrills this wilderness can offer in one day.
In the afternoon, beneath shady trees on the riverside, there appears the most beautifully located Mwambashi River Lodge. Here to spend the next 4 nights accommodated in large East Africa style tents on platforms, each with en suite bathroom. (B,L,D)
Day 6 - 8 Mwambashi
These days give you the opportunity to take in the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Park. Activities include exploring this game abundant area by vehicle or on foot. Canoeing further downstream or spending more time on the river fishing from motorboats are options to complement morning and evening/night game drives. For fisherman there is no better experience to try for the renowned tiger fish on this world famous stretch of river. (B,L,D)
Day 9 To Lusaka
Depart for Lusaka in the afternoon by private plane from Jecki airstrip. We can arrange accommodation at Chaminuka Game Farm just outside Lusaka close to the airport at additional cost if needed.
