Day 1 to 2 - Marrakech
We arrive in Marrakech and transfer to our centrally located
hotel only 5 minutes walk from Djemma-el-Fna, the lively
centre of this city. The following day is free for you to
explore this marvellous old city. Like many North African
towns, Marrakech has always been a meeting place for the
mountain Berbers and the desert people of the south. Colourful
souks perfectly illustrate this fact. The celebrated Djemma-el-Fna
Square is a spectacle not to be missed where there are many
street performers to watch and enjoy. Also worth visiting
are the Koutoubia Minaret, Saadian Tombs, Ben Yussef Medersa,
the Dar Si Said Palace (now the Museum of Moroccan Art) and
the Minara Gardens. Your tour leader can organize an optional
walking tour around the souks with a local guide. Days
3 to 12 - Trekking the Mountains
We head into the Atlas Mountains, making for the small hamlet
of Imill. From here we walk along a mule track for about
an hour to the small Berber village of Aremd (1950m) where
we overnight in a local house. The rugged Atlas Mountains
run east to west for some 1500 miles and fall away abruptly
into the Sahara Desert beyond. Few roads venture into the
mountains and tiny villages dot the high mountain valleys
or cling precariously to the rocky flanks, inhabited by the
hardy and hospitable Berber people. From Aremd we begin our
exploration of the High Atlas range with a series of treks,
possible spending each night in a different place. The circuits
walked will very depending on local conditions and on the
group's ability. We may explore the area to the north of
Aremd, a less strenuous route but reaches lesser known villages.
However a more difficult trek around Mt Toubkal could be
undertaken, affording magnificent views in a rugged landscape.
Day 13 to 15 - Marrakech
In the morning we return to Aremd leaving the afternoon free
to enjoy a final moment of High Atlas village life. The following
morning we walk back down the hill and drive to Marrakech
via Asni. The tours ends on the morning of Day 15 back in
your hotel in Marrakech. |
