Day 1 - Nairobi
Transfer from Nairobi airport to Nairobi Serena hotel
for overnight BB.
Tranquilly set in beautifully landscaped gardens, overlooking Central Park and the city center, the Nairobi Serena Hotel is renowned for its caring and attentive service. The décor is warm and inviting, reflecting the richness of the African continent. All rooms are air-conditioned and are tastefully appointed with handcrafted furniture, marble bathrooms, satellite TV, mini-bar, electronic safe, and IDD telephones.
Day 2 - Samburu
Drive North to the arid bush country of Samburu, North of Mt Kenya. Lunch and afternoon game viewing in Samburu, a seemingly inhospitable area brought to life by the Uaso Nyiro river on which the wildlife depend. Spend the next two nights at Samburu Intrepids club overlooking the river.
Perched on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in the heart of Samburu National Reserve, Samburu Intrepids enjoys a unique perspective of one of Africa’s most celebrated wildernesses. Activities include twice-daily game drives with resident guides; camel and walking safaris outside the reserve; seasonal rafting trips on the Uaso Nyiro River; bush breakfasts and dinners under the stars; romantic sundowners overlooking the plains; visits to neighbouring Samburu communities; traditional dancers by local warriors and maidens; lectures and slide shows on culture and wildlife; and Heritage's famous Adventurers' Club for the kids. The camp’s location deep inside the reserve guarantees close encounters with the region’s shier wildlife, including elephant, lion, leopard, and Samburu’s famous ‘unique five’ - the rare reticulated giraffe, long-necked gerenuk antelope, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, and majestic beisa oryx. Because of the warm climate, Samburu Intrepids’ public areas are all palm-thatched and open to the elements, raised on stilts to catch the cooling breeze blowing off the river. The main dining room has a seating capacity of 60, and opens onto an outdoor dining terrace, where buffet breakfasts and lunches are served overlooking the river. (Meals can also be enjoyed on your private verandah or at one of a series of specially selected 'bush sites' close to the camp.) Intrepids also boasts a spacious lounge and bar area, where naturalists deliver fascinating slide shows on most evenings, and an intimate conference room with a television for viewing wildlife documentaries. Behind the bar, surrounded by shady sunbathing areas, is our freeform swimming pool - a soothing drop of blue in this otherwise arid land.
Day 3 - Samburu
A full day game viewing in Samburu. Look for lion, elephant or hippo along the river trail. Most interesting are the unusual species like oryx, gerenuk, reticulated giraffe and perhaps kudu.
Day 4 - Sweetwaters
Return to the Highlands to Sweetwater private ranch and Rhino Sanctuary, lying between Mt Kenya and the Aberdares. Afternoon game viewing including a visit to the Rhino and Chimpanzee conservation projects. After dinner take an optional night game drive (payable locally) or relax at the "waterhole" bar. Overnight at Sweetwaters tented camp.
A sheltered oasis, clustered around a waterhole and set in the pristine calm of a private wildlife conservancy, Sweetwaters Tented Camp is in a class of its own. Abounding with wildlife, unfettered by the more rigorous strictures of the Kenyan National Parks and designed to offer a charming blend of under canvas ambiance and uncompromising luxury, it has long been the preferred retreat of wilderness and safari lovers alike. One of only four private game reserves in Kenya, Ol Pejeta Conservancy excels in the provision of privileged seclusion and private game viewing. Thanks to its private status it also allows such unforgettable pleasures as the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary (the only place in Kenya to see these highly endangered animals), visits to Morani, a tame black rhino, night game drives, guided bush walks and camel-trekking across game-teaming plains.
Day 5 - Masai Mara
After breakfast fly across the Rift Valley directly into Kenya’s finest wildlife reserve, the Masai Mara. Afternoon game viewing. Spend the next 3 nights at Mara Intrepids Club or similar.
Set in the heart of Africa's Great Plains, the Masai Mara boasts 1,672 square kilometres of unspoilt wilderness. It is home to the highest concentration of animals and birds anywhere on the continent. Throughout the year the Mara is a place of natural drama, a kaleidoscope of colour and life. The famed "Big Five" - Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Buffalo and Leopard - roam the reserve, together with hundreds of others from the fastest animal on earth, the cheetah, to one of the most secretive, the bat-eared fox. After the rains, when the first flush of grass turns the Mara's golden savannah green, the mesmerizing wildlife spectacle anywhere takes place here: the Great Migration. This is the time when 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by vast numbers of zebra and gazelles make the long and dangerous trek from drier lands in Tanzania, northwards to this corner of Kenya. For most of the century the Mara has drawn those searching for adventure and the thrill is still the same today with days spent face to face with nature at its most untouched and enthralling.
Mara Intrepids Club enjoys one of the most spectacular locations in the world's best-known wilderness. It sits above a sweeping bend in the Talek River at the confluence of the Masai Mara's four game-viewing areas. Mara Intrepids camp is a short drive from the Mara River, where more than a million wildebeest and zebra make their perilous migration crossing every July and August. For the remainder of the year, the camp offers some of the world's finest game viewing, with large local populations of plains game, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, and all the big cats.
Days
6 and 7- Masai Mara
Two full days game viewing in the Mara in 4WD vehicle with open-top roof. Look for the "Big Five" and of course the huge herds of wildebeest, zebra, topi and other antelope. It may be possible to spot cheetah or perhaps a leopard hanging in a tree.
Day 8 - Masai Mara - Nairobi
Morning game viewing and lunch at the camp. Later in the afternoon, transfer to airstrip for scheduled flight to Nairobi (option to fly back to Nairobi in the morning). Transfer to NBO airport or a Nairobi hotel.
