Zanzibar - Serena Hotel - Breezes Beach Club
Zanzibar, the Spice Island, is an island of dreams, lies about 35 kilometers off the coast of mainland Tanzania. This extraordinarily beautiful island is one of the most un-spoilt and enchanting of all the tropical islands; steeped in tradition and culture. The Arabic influence in the old 'Stone Town' lives strongly and one can wander for hours through the maze of ancient streets, exploring the busy market stalls and little shops, famed particularly for their beautiful wood carvings.
Day 1 - 2
On arrival at Zanzibar airport you will be met and transferred to the Serena Hotel in Stone Town where you will overnight the next two nights on a bed and breakfast basis. On one of the days, follow your nose through an intoxicating Spice Tour. Depart from Zanzibar town via new settlements and small scale industries. Out in the countryside, pass by cultivations of Cashew nuts and Kasawa (Cassava), a staple diet of Zanzibaris. Visit several small, private farms growing exotic fruits and spices. Taste fruits in season such as Breadfruit, Jack fruit, Papaya, Pineapple, Star fruit, Mango, Banana, Avocado and even the foul smelling Durian. Sample the strange or perhaps familiar aromas of spices such as Cinnamon, Cardomom, Nutmeg, Black Pepper and Zanzibar’s most famous spice - the Clove. Learn about various plants with special uses such as the Iodine plant, the Elangi-elangi tree, the Hennae bush and the Mbirimbi tree. Continue the tour with a visit to one of several Persian baths, before a stop for refreshments. Return towards town, stopping en route to see the Maruhubi Palace ruins, originally built by the great Sultan Barghash. A final stop at Livingstone house before finishing the tour.
